Celebrate Coach Charlie with a comment or story below!

Charlie, You were the best coach I ever had.  To this day, I am super grateful that you made your return to Lawrence for my first year there.  Because you saw something in me that I can still, sometimes struggle to see in myself today, you had such a huge impact on my life.  You were always looking out for me.  You gave me the opportunity to be a dorm proctor.  You made sure I didn’t snap my neck while leaning back and sleeping in my chair during study hall hours. Of all my teachers and coaches throughout my academic career, you were the only one who cared enough to push me to figure out why I was sleeping all the time, which ultimately led to my narcolepsy diagnosis.  I absolutely loved playing hockey for you.  It was the most intense, yet fun, playing experience of my career.  When I coached, I even used some of the helpful tips you shared with all of us: “BEND YOUR KNEES!!  BE AN ATHLETE!  IF YOU CAN’T, FAKE IT!!!”–one of my favorites. I love the “let’s strive for mediocrity” speech, too. There are so many great memories…the crooked hat, the goofy gloves, the spitting while yelling. Most importantly though, I knew that you genuinely cared about me. Thank you for being the coach and mentor that you were to me.
